The event “EU-ASEAN relations: the next forty years”, taking place

on Tuesday 27 February from 09:30 to 12:30 at The Hotel (Boulevard de Waterloo 38, Brussels).

This event, co-organised by Friends of Europe, the EU and ASEAN, will be followed by a networking lunch.

“Miracle” or mere “talk shop” – opinion on ASEAN’s achievements and future direction continue to be divided. But one thing is certain: ASEAN – like the European Union – is a successful peace project. Today, changing global and regional realities make the group an even more central player and key political, security and trade partner for the EU. As ASEAN turns fifty and the two regions celebrate forty years of relations, they appear ready to step up cooperation on shared concerns including the 2018 priorities for strengthening resilience and innovation set out by Singapore as the group’s new chair.
The two regions’ relations have shown a remarkable degree of resilience so far but will the relationship survive – and if it does will it still matter in forty years?
In a volatile world, what can the ASEAN and EU do better and/or differently to reinforce relations in the coming years?
Given their differences on key issues like human rights, can the two regional groupings forge a true strategic partnership and negotiate a free trade agreement?
